一、“as…as…结构”的一般用法
“as+形容词或副词原级+as…”意为“和……一样”, 表示同级的比较, 但要注意第一个as为副词, 第二个as为连词。根据比较对象和性质的不同, 又可以把此种结构分为三种:
(一) “as…as…结构”用于表示不同人或物同一性质的比较, 意为“……和……一样……”
例如:The tree is as tall as the building (is) .这棵树和那栋楼一样高。
注意此结构也常用于形象比喻中:as cool as cucumber沉着的, as stubborn as a mule非常顽强的, 倔强的, as clear as crystal非常透明的, as poor as a church mouse非常贫困的, as busy as a bee像蜜蜂一样忙碌, as easy as ABC像ABC一样容易, as deep as a well像井一样深, as light as a feather像羽毛一样轻, as soft as butter像黄油一样软。这些短语生动活泼, 浅显易懂, 记住这些短语可以提高学生的英语写作和口语能力。
(二) “as…as…结构”用于表示同一个人或物不同性质的比较, 意为“既……又……”
例如:This swimming pool is as wide as it is long.这个游泳池宽度和长度相等。
(三) “as…as…结构”用于表示两个人或物不同性质的比较, 表示程度相同或相当, 意为“……而……”, 在否定句中结构是“so/as…as…”
例如:He was as handsome as his wife was beautiful.他长得非常英俊, 他的妻子也长得非常漂亮。
He was as experienced as his brother was green.他经验丰富, 而他兄弟却涉世未深。
He cannot run so/as fast as you.他没你跑得快。
Danny is not so/as wise as he is witty.丹尼为人风趣, 但欠明智。
需要注意的是:“as+形容词或副词原级+as…”结构的变体形式是“as+形容词+a+单数名词+as或as+many/much+名词+as”。意为“……和……一样……”。例如:
I don't want as expensive a car as this.=I don't want a car as expensive as this.我不要这么贵的汽车。
This is as good an example as the other is.这个例子和另外一个例子一样好。
Tony is as clever a boy as his brother.托尼是一个和他兄弟一样聪明的男孩。
I can carry as much paper as you can.我能搬得动和你一样多的纸。
此外, 变体结构的否定形式为“so+adj.+a/an+n. (单数) +as”。例如:
I am not so strong a man as I was.我已经没有从前那么强壮了。
二、“as…as…结构”中常见词组和句式的用法
“as…as…结构”中常见词组和句式有很多, 最常见的词组有“as soon as”意思是“一……就……”, 引导一个时间状语从句, 还有“as much as”和“as many as”意思是“像……一样多……”, 用来表达极其多的语气。学生在学习中时常会遇到这些词组, 对这些词组的用法并不陌生, 笔者对此无需赘述。下列笔者将要介绍“as…as…结构”中其他一些常用词组和句式:
(一) 词组“as long as”意思是“长达……之久, 只要……”, 引导时间或条件状语从句
如:It took us as long as three years to carry out the plan.我们花了长达三年的时间才完成这项计划。
You may borrow this book as long as you promise to give it back.只要你答应归还, 你就可以把这书借走。
As long as you work hard, you are sure to succeed in everything.只要你努力, 你就一定会事事成功。
(二) 词组“as far as”意思是“那么远, 就……而知, 就……言”
如:He walked as far as the railway station yesterday evening.昨天傍晚, 他一直散步到火车站。
As far as I’m concerned, she is the most qualified for the job.在我看来, 她是最适合这份工作的。
(三) 句式“as+many/much+名词+as”意思是“……和……一样”。此结构是词组“as much as”和“as many as”的变体形式
如:To eat too much is as much a bad thing as to eat nothing.吃太多和什么都不吃同样是坏事。
He is as much a member of the orchestra as Tom.他和汤姆同样是管弦乐队的成员。
Comets are just as much members of the sun’s family as (are) the other planets.彗星和其他的行星同样是太阳家族的成员。
(四) 以下几个结构的意思都差不多:“as…as possible/as…as one can (could) /as…as…can be”都表示“尽可能地……”的意思
如:Read the story as quickly as possible.=Read the story as quickly as you can.尽快地阅读这篇故事。
They watered the trees as often as possible.=They watered the trees as often as they could.他们尽可能经常给树浇水。
His failure is as plain as plain can be.他的失败是再明白不过了。
He is as handsome as handsome can be.他潇洒极了。
Mary is as hardworking as can be.玛丽学习极为努力。
其他例如:
as wise as wise can be再聪明不过了
as white as white can be白得不能再白了
as wrong as wrong can be错得太离谱了
(五) “as…as usual/ever/before”, 此结构的意思是“像平时/以前一样”
如:He gets up as early as usual.他像平时一样早起。
He seems to be as busy as ever.他似乎像往常一样忙碌。
He works as hard as ever.他和往常一样努力工作。
She was as beautiful as ever after so many years.过了这么多年她美丽如故。
(六) “as…as…结构”可以用来表示倍数。具体用法是, 倍数词twice、three times、half或a quarter置于第一个as之前, 意思是“……是……的几倍”
如:You are not half as clever as you think you are.你可不像自己想象的那么聪明。
She isn’t going out with a man who is twice as old as she.她不打算和一个比她大一倍的人出去散步。
We’ve produced twice as much cotton this year as we did last year.我们今年的棉花产量是去年的两倍。
She works three times as hard as I.她用功的程度是我的三倍。
需要注意的是, 在比较级前还可以用“over、more than”等表示“比……倍数还要多”。如:He is more than three times as rich as I.他的财富是我的三倍还不止。
I am more than twice as old as he.我的年龄是他的两倍还不止。
He studies more than three times as hard as I.他用功的程度是我的三倍还不止。
He has collected more than four times as many stamps as I.他搜集的邮票是我的四倍还不止。
(七) 词组“as well as”意思是“像…一样好, 既…又…, 除之外还”, 此短语使用频率十分高, 用途非常广泛。它可以用作连词和介词, 也可以表示比较
具体用法如下:
1. 词组“as well as”用作连词。
连接两个并列的同等成分, 其意义为“不但……而且……”, “既……又……”, 这时相当于“not only…but also…”。它所连接的部分既可以是单词、短语, 也可以是句子。例如:He speaks Japanese as well as English and French.他不但讲英语和法语, 而且还讲日语。
2. 词组“as well as”用作介词。
此时, 相当于besides, 意为“除……之外”, 后常接名词、动名词。如:As well as visiting the old man, he helped to clean the room.除看望老人外, 他还帮助打扫房间。
3.“as well as”用于同级比较, 意为“和…
……一样 (好) ”, 这时, 第一个as是副词, 第二个as是连词, 引导一个状语从句, 表示同级比较。如:He can operate the machine as well as I do.他操作这台机器和我一样熟练。
4. 在使用“as well as”时还应注意以下几点:
(1) 当“as well as”连接主语时, 谓语动词的人称和数应与“as well as”之前的名词或代词的人称和数保持一致。如:Mary as well as I has been to the Great Wall.我和玛丽去过长城。
(2) 当“as well as”连接两个谓语动词时, 前后时态与形式应保持一致。如:They play the piano as well as sing.他们不但会唱歌, 而且会弹琴。
(3) 当“as well as”连接两个简单动词时, 也可充当插入语, 这时as well as后的动词在人称和数上应与主语保持一致。如:He works, as well as sleeps, in the room.他既在这房间里睡觉, 又在这儿工作。
(4) 当“as well as”前的动词是分词或不定式, 那么“as well as”后的动词应取相应的形式 (不定式不带to) 。如:You can’t expect her to do the housework as well as look after the children.你不可能叫她既做家务又照看小孩。
(5) 如果“as well as”前的谓语动词是一般现在时或一般过去时, “as well as”之后的动词可与前面一致, 也可用动名词形式。如:She sings as well as playing the piano.她不但会弹琴, 而且会唱歌。
(6) 如果“as well as”前面的动词是分词, 那么“as well as”后的动词也应用分词形式。如:We are repairing the roof, as well as painting the walls.我们既油漆墙壁, 又修房顶。
(7) “as well as”也可以用于否定结构中, 当not位于“as well as”后时, 两者都否定;当not用于as well as前时, 否定前者, 肯定后者。试比较:
I shall not see the film as well as he.他将去看电影, 而我不去。
I, as well as he, shall not see the film.他不去看电影, 我也不去。

英语里的as一词。看似简单,但实际应用中颇为复杂。从词类上讲,as具有四种不同的词性,即:关系代词,连词,(关系)副词,介词,从语法功能上讲,as可以引导定语从句,状语从句,也可以和它的宾语一起构成介词短语,引出宾语补足语,主语补足语,定语,状语,表语,As与其它词的搭配关系也很广泛,是英语中比较难掌握的一个常用词。为了便于掌握,现就其用法归纳如下:
1As作关系代词
As作关系代词常和the same,such连用,引导限定性的定语从句,as在从句中作主语,宾语,或表语,as的先行词是它前面的名词,例如:
She wore the same dress as she wore at Maryswedding,
She is of the same height as she was tenyears ago
但是as的先行词,不一定是一个名词或代词,有时是前面的整个句子,以as来引导出一个非限定性定语从。例如:
He was a foreigner。as I know from his accent
当as引导非限定性定语从句时,可以放在主句前,或主句后,或插在中间,译成中文的“像”,正如”等,与主句用逗号隔开,这种结构带有插入语的性质,对主句做进一步说明。例如:
1)We have lauched another man—made satel—lite,as i8 announced in todays news papers,
2)As might be expected,a knowledge of psy-chology is essential for good advertisement,

这种以as引出非限定性定语从句,as代替整个主句的表达形式很多,常见的有:
1)as is often the case像往常一样
2)as is well known众所周知
3)as has been said before如上所述
4)as has been already pointed out正如已指出的那样
5)as may be imagined如可想象出来的那样
6)as is reported in the newspaper据报纸报道
7)as often happens正如经常发生的那样

2As用作连词
As用作连词可以引导状语从句,表时间,让步,原因,方式,比较等,此时它可以有just修饰,例如:
1)表时间(当……时候,随着…)

As spring warms the good earth。an flowersbegin to bloom,
2)表让步(尽管…,,虽然…,无论…,),
as表“让步”,肯定的语气较强,多用于书面语言中。由as引导的让步状语从句,为了强调从句中的补足语或修饰语,常采用倒装结构,倒装的成分可以是形容词,分词,副词,动词,名词,等。例如:
Young as he was,he was able,
Unpopular as white has been in the past,at themoment it is a favorite choice for wedding gown,
Wounded as he was,he refused to come backfrom the front,
Much as I should like to see you。I am afraidyou could not come,
Child as he was,he knew something of electric—ity,

注:以动词开始时,常和may,might,will,would连用。
3)表原因(,鉴于…,,因为…,由于…)
As he was not well,I decided to gowithout him,

以as引导的表达“原因”的从句,为了强调语气,也可以把表语置于句首(部分倒装),其形式于表达“让步”的从句完全相同,但意义不同,因而只能从句子内容上去区别它们,让步从句的内容大多与主句在意义上相反,原因从句与主句有因果关系。例如;
Cowared as he was,he ran back as soon as theenemy a~acked,(表原因)
Young as he was,he was not equal to this task,(表原因)
Young as he was,he was equal to this work,(表让步)
4)表方式
as经常用来引导方式状语从句,此时它可以由just或exactly修饰,(如同…,,,就像…,,)
Just as the earth circles round the sun,so themoon turns roun the earth,
She cooks a turkey just as her mother did,
Everything happened as(had been)expected,
She never pretended to be as she wasn't,

3As用作副词
as用作副词,表示程度,在句子中做状语,主要用在as……as结构中,此时as的意思为“如同,像”例如:
His face is as black as coal,
He did it in two hours,but“took me as manydays,
但在the same…as结构中,a8还可以作关系副词,引导定语从句,as在从句中起状语作用,表地点,时间,方式。

4As用作介词
411as用作介词时,有两个基本词义。一个是“作为”。另一个是“似,像”,例如
The actor who appeared as Romeo was his goodfriend,
He works as a clerk for an insurance firm,
She behaved toward him as a mother,
as用作介词时,要注意与介词like的异同,as意为“似,像”时,与介词like通用,但是当as用来表示“作为,担任”时,与介词有区别。例如:
He spoke as a teacher,他作为教师讲话。
He spoke like a teacher,他像教师一样讲话。(他不是教师,)
412As用作介词引出同位语,宾语补足语,主语补足语,等。例如
1)同位语

2)宾语补足语
有些常见的动词象:act,conceive,,employ,re-port,speak of,adopt,count,espress,portray,say,state,understand,classify,define,know,praise,describe,consider,refer to,think of,use,take。acknowledge,account等后都可以构成这种“动词(或动词性词组)+名词(代词)+as+宾语补足语”的结构,作宾语补足语的词可以是名词,形容词,介词短语,分词等。例如:

We accept the conclusion as true,
We regard that conclusion as of consequence,

3)主语补足语
as用作介词引出主语补足语,这种结构多数是被动结构。

由as搭配的固定词组很多,下面简单介绍一些常用的词组:
1)as by(如由…),as against(与…对比),asconcerning—as tOUChing(关于…),as from(从…开始,英国用法)as of(从…开始或废止,美国用法>,这些都可以把它看Group—preposition的一种,因为是在介词as后再接用另外一个介词的缘故,这是用as来限制后接的另一个介词的意义的。例如:

AS的用法, 我认为有大致可以分为五种, 分别是:关系代词, 指示副词, 关系副词, 介词和连接词。
一、As作为关系代词
1.As与别的词搭配用作关系代词
As常与the same, such so和as等词搭配, 构成the same...as, such...as, so...as和as...as 之类的句型。例如:
Have you bought the same book as I referred to yesterday?
你已经买到我昨天提到的那本书了吗?
I don't like such books as he recommends.
我不喜欢他推荐的那些书。
Here is so big a stone as no man can lift.
这里是一块没有人搬得动的大石头。
2.As单独作关系代词
It is absolutely wrong to think foreign languages are useless, as quite a few people did before.

二、As作关系副词和不定关系副词
1.用作关系副词引导比较状语从句
这样用法的常出现于the same...as, such...as和so...as句型

2.用作不定关系副词, 引导表语从句或宾补从句
Things are not as they seem to be.
事物并不是像它们表面看起来那样的。
Leave the children as they are.
不要去管孩子们。
三、作连接词
1.表示时间 (Time)
As a child ( as he was a child) , he joined the chess club.
还是小孩子的时候, 他就参加了棋类俱乐部。
2.表示方式 (Manner)
You must come as you are; don't dress.
你应该照平常样子来;不要打扮。
3.表示原因 (Cause)
As he studies very hard, he has made great progress.
因为他学习很努力, 所以他已经有了很大的进步。
4.表示条件 (Conditions)
We can surely overcome the difficulties so long as we are closely united.
只要我们紧密团结, 就一定能够克服这些困难。
5.表示让步 (Concessions)
Child as he is, he can tell black from white.
尽管他 (只) 是个孩子, 但他尚能分辨黑白。
6.表示类比 (Parallelism)
He is a brave man, as are all of his family.

四、作介词
单独使用时, 可以用作如下成分:
1.用作状语
She works as a doctor.
她是一名医生。
2.用作定语
He has got a position as teacher of English.

3.用作宾补

4.用作表语
We look upon him as a great hero.

2.插入语
As a matter of fact, Tom is an honest man.
事实上, 汤姆是个老实人。
This book gives, as it were, a vivid picture of the Chinese education.

3.定语

as是英语中意义广泛、用法灵活且复现率极高的词, 每年高考命题和其他各级命题都会从不同角度对其进行考查。它在词性上有介词、连词和代词等,主要有以下用法。
一、作介词
表示“作为,当作;以„„身份”,其后常接名词。
例如:Johnson works as a doctor.约翰逊(的职业)是个医生。
I like him as a person, but I don’t think much of him as s writer.作为一个普通人,我是喜欢他的,但是作为一名作家,我对他的评价并不高。
Wang Baoqiang’s talents as a film actor were soon recognized.作为电影演员,王宝强的天才很快得到了赏识。
【注意】as和like都可以作介词,但意义不同。as表示“以实际的身份或地位”,like则表示“与„„相似,以与„„相类似的方式”。
例如:He has been playing tennis as a professional for five years.(= he is a professional)他作为一名职业选手已经打了五年网球了。
He plays tennis like a professional.(= he is not a professional but he plays as well as a professional)他打网球就像职业选手一样。
二、作连词
as作连词时,用法比较多,可以引导时间状语从句、原因状语从句、方式状语从句、让步状语从句等。
(一)as引导时间状语从句
表示主句和从句的动作同时发生,并具有延续的含义,意思是“正当„„的时候;随着„„”。
例如:Tom caught sight of Jenny as he was getting off the train.正当汤姆下火车的时候,他看见珍妮了。
As the election approaches, the situation in Libya is getting worse and worse.随着大选的临近,利比亚局势越来越糟糕。
【注意】as与when,while都是引导时间状语从句的从属连词,含义都是“当„„的时候”。但它们有区别:as和when引导的从句可以表示一个短暂性的动作,也可以表示一个持续性的动作;用when时,从句的动作可以与主句的动作同时发生,也可以先于主句的动作发生;但若要表示两个正在发展变化的情况时,一般用as,表示“随着……”。用while时,主句动作与从句动作同时进行或在从句动作过程中发生,从句动词必须是延续性的。
(二)as引导原因状语从句
as一般放在句首,语气较弱,较口语化。
例如:As she has no car, she can’t get the station easily.因为她没有车,去车站不容易。As it is raining, we shall not go the park.由于天在下雨,我们不去公园了。
【注意】as和because,since都可以表示因果关系,但它们有区别:because表示的语气最强,当用于由why提问的句子回答时,必须用because作答;since常常用在书面语中,表示多为对方已知的、或稍加分析便可得知的原因,有时可译作“既然”。
例如:Tom was absent from the opening ceremony because he was ill.因为他生病了,汤姆没有参加开幕式。
--Why can’t I go skiing? 为什么我不能去?--Because you’re too young.因为你太年轻了。
He must have shut the door since he was the last one to leave.他肯定关门了,因为他是最后一个离开的。Since you can’t answer the question, perhaps we’d better ask someone else.既然你不能回答这个问题,我们也许该问问别人。
(三)as引导让步状语从句
as所表示的语气较强,意思是“虽然”,它引导的让步状语从句用倒装语序。倒装语序主要有以下三种形式:
1.形容词或副词+as+主语+(连系动词)be或实义动词。
例如:Rich as he is, he never spends a cent on clothes.虽然他很富有,但他从不花一分钱买衣服。
Much as I admire his courage, I don’t think he acted wisely.我虽然佩服他的勇气,但我认为他这样做是不明智的。
Hard as I studied, I couldn’t catch up with others in class.我虽然努力学习,但赶不上班里其他同学。
2.名词+as+主语+(连系动词)be(注意:句首的名词不带冠词)。
例如:Child as he is, he knows a lot about physics.尽管他是个孩子,但对物理知道不少。3.实义动词+as+主语+助动词,如果没有助动词,则要加上一个do(does或did。例如:Try as he may, he never succeeds.尽管他很努力,但总是不成功。
Search as they would here and there, they could find nothing in the room.尽管到处寻找,但他们在房子里找不到任何东西。
【注意】这种倒装结构中,as可以用though替换,但是不能用although,在运用时要特别注意。
(四)as引导方式状语从句
意思是“如”,“像”,“按照„„的方式”。例如:Remember, you must do everything as I do.记住,你必须按照我做的那样做一切。
(五)as…as…的用法
as...as…意为“和„„一样„„”,表示同级的比较。使用时要注意第一个as为副词,第二个as为连词。其肯定结构为:as+ adj./ adv.+as…;否定结构为:not as/so +adj./ adv.+as…。
例如:This film is as interesting as that one.这部电影和那部电影一样有趣。He can speak English as fluently as a native.他说英语和当地人一样流利。
This dictionary is not as/so useful as you think.这本字典不如你想象的那样有用。【注意】若有修饰成分,如twice, three times, half, a quarter等,则须置于第一个as之前。例如:Your car is twice as expensive as mine.你的汽车比我的贵一倍。
三、作代词
as作代词时,常用于引导定语从句,主要有以下结构: 1.用于the same...as,such...as等结构中
例如:This is the same book as I read last week.这本书和我上周读的那本是一样的。I don’t like such books as he recommends.我不喜欢他推荐的那些书。2.用于“so/as +adj.+ a/an + n.(单数)+ as”结构中
The man is not so/as healthy a man as he was.那个人已经没有从前那么健康了。3.as引导非限制性定语从句时,所指代的内容通常指整个结构;在句子中位置比较灵活,可以在句首、句中或句末。
例如:She is late, as is often the case.她迟到了,这是经常的事。(先行词是整个主句)To shut your eyes to facts, as many of you do, is foolish.视而不见是愚蠢的,好多人都是如此。(先行词是不定式短语)David, as you know, is a famous actor.你是知道的,大卫是著名的演员。【注意】当修饰句子的非限制性定语从句位于句末时,as可以用which来替代。但是,当as从句位于句首或句中时,as就不能用which来替代了。
例如:I live a long way from work, as(which)you know.我住得离工作单位很远,这你是知道的。
As you will find out, I will never let you down.你将会发现,我绝不会使你失望的。Taiwan, as you know, is an inseparable part of China.你们知道,台湾是中国不可分割的一部分。
【注意】as引导非限制性定语从句时,常用于一些固定结构中。如:as we all know/as is known to all大家都知道;as is often the case情况就是这样;as is said/mentioned above/as has been said before如上所述;as can be seen大家看到;as is/was expected/as we expect正如预料;as I can remember我能记住

湖北国土资源职业学院自2000年申办高职以来, 一直沿用高教社出版的高职高专系列英语教材, 从《实用英语》到《新编英语》, 再到《新编实用英语》。笔者认为, 到目前为止, 《新编实用英语》是最适合我院师生的一套教材。
在实施教学的过程中, 笔者发现, 该教材中as重复出现的频率很高, 由于语义多样、用法灵活, 使得许多同学在学习过程中, 解读起来感到有障碍, 经常会出现理解上的偏差。下面就以《新编实用英语》 (第二版) 为例, 列举该教材中所出现的as用法, 并加以总结和归纳, 以帮助同学们学习备考, 现从五个方面分述如下:
1 as作连词, 常用来连接主句和状语从句
该功能在教材中出现的频率最高, 尤其是作方式状语:
1) 引导方式状语从句, 作“正如, (如) 像”解。
In many instances it is the inviter who pays, as one wouldexpect, but in some instances each one pays his or her owncheck:You“go Dutch”.
在许多情形下, 一般认为应由邀请人付账单, 但是有时各付各的账。
句中as one would expect意为“正如人们所期望的那样”。 (Book 2, p8)
As Leonard says, “Where children go, their mothers will fol-low.”
正如蒂斯所说:“孩子们到哪里, 母亲就会跟到哪里”。 (Book 2, p139) 2)
2) 引导时间状语从句, 作“当…的时候”解, 有“随着…”之意。
注意:as与when, while都是引导时间状语从句的从属连词, 含义都是”当……的时候”。但它们有区别:用when时, 从句的动作可以与主句的动作同时发生, 也可以先于主句的动作发生;用while时, 从句的动作为一过程, 主句动作与从句动作同时进行或在从句动作过程中发生;用as时, 主句和从句的动作同时发生, 具有延续的含义。例如:
It was snowing when he arrived at the construction site.
他到达工地时, 天正下着雪。
He was watching TV while his mother was cooking.
他母亲做饭时他在看电视。
New slang has been invented in recent years by students, es-pecially as they get access to the Internet and chat online.
近年来, 学生们发明了新的俚语, 尤其会用在他们上网聊天时。 (Book 2, p19)
As almost every conceivable contact between human beingsgets automated, the alienation index goes up.

3) 引导原因状语从句。
注意:As, because, since都可以表示因果关系, 连接原因状语从句, 含义是“因为, 由于”, 但他们有区别:because表示的语气最强:as一般放在句首, 语气较弱, 较口语化;since常常用在书面语中, 表示多为对方已知的, 或稍加分析便可得知的原因, 有时可译作“既然”。例如:
He will succeed because he is in earnest.
他一定会成功, 因为他很认真。
Since you are so sure of it he’ll believe you.
既然你对此如此有把握, 他会相信你的。
The ability to remain anonymous leads to a kind of cheatingas lying about personal identity is perfectly acceptable and consid-ered normal in chatrooms.
因为隐瞒个人身份是完全被接受的, 也被认为是正常的, 所以不透露姓名会引起某种欺骗。 (Book 2, p29)
4) 引导比较状语从句, 在“as…as…”结构中的第二个as是连词, 其基本结构为:as+adj./adv.+as。
You have to be able to“stand as straight as a pine tree, sitas square as a stone, and move as quickly as a gust of wind”.
你必须得能够做到“站如松, 坐如磐, 行如风”。 (Book 1, p97) The Arch is over twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty.

5) 引导让步状语从句。as although (though) h
as与although (或though) , however (或no matter how) 等都可以引导让步状语从句, 含义是“虽然, 尽管”, 但它们有区别:although语气稍正式些, 可放在句首, 也可放在句中, 主句中不能再用but, 但可以用yet;as所表示的语气较强, 引导的让步状语从句用倒装语序;however引导让步状语从句时, 它的后面可跟形容词或副词, 也要用倒装语序。例如:
We need to check the information, though we think it is cor-rect.
我们需要核对这条信息, 尽管我们相信它是正确的。 (Workbook 2, p91)
Strange as it may seem, nobody was injured in the accident.
这次意外虽然显得令人不可思议, 却没有人受伤。
However hard she tried, she never seems able to do thework satisfactorily.
尽管她做出了努力, 但她似乎从来未能够令人满意地完成任务。 (Workbook 2, p91)
2 as作介词
1) 作“如, 像”解。
I was very relieved and grateful for the kindness I’d experi-enced from so many people who’d treated me like a friend inneed and not just as a foreigner.
我松了一口气, 心里充满感激, 我感受到他们的善良, 他们把我当成患难中的朋友, 而不只是把我当成一个外国人。
句中like和as都是介词, 且都是being的意思, 都作方式状语。 (Book 1, p45)
2) 作“充当, 作为, 以…身份”解。
I don’t like the traditional custom of giving money as a NewYear’s gift.Book 1, p29
我不喜欢新年送钱作为礼物的习俗。 (Book 1, p29)
As our guest, you will receive the best in service and quality.Book 2, p65
作为我们的客人, 您将得到最优质的服务。 (Book 2, p65)
3 作副词, 表示程度, 意为“同样地”
在“as…as…”结构中的第一个as是副词, 作“和/与… (不) 一样”解。例如:
You have to be able to“stand as straight as a pine tree, sitas square as a stone, and move as quickly as a gust of wind”.The Arch is over twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty.

4 as作关系代词
1) 引导限制性定语从句, 用在“such…as”, “the same…as”, “as…as”等结构中, 常译作“像…一样的人 (或物) ”, “凡是…的人 (或物) ”。例如:
He never hesitates to make such criticisms as are consideredhelpful to others.
他从不犹豫指出对他人有益的批评。 (Book 2, p70)
Meeting new friends in real life is not the same as doing soonline.
现实生活中结交新朋友与网上结交新朋友不是一码事。 (Book 2, p30)
2) 引导非限制性定语从句, 用来指代它前面的整个句子 (即先行句) , 意思是“这一点”。这个分句可以位于句首、句中或句末。例如:
As is well known, oceans cover more than 70%of the earth.
我们知道, 海洋占地球面积的百分之七十以上。
5 含as的固定词组的用法
1) as a matter of fact作“其实;事实上”解。
As a matter of fact, your gift would be appreciated all themore if you make it yourself.
事实上, 如果你送给他们的礼物是自己动手做的而不是从商店买的, 他们会对这份礼物更加珍爱。 (Book 2, p25)
2) as long as作“只要”解, 在句中作条件状语从句。
It’s supposed to cloud over this afternoon.Well, as long as it doesnt rain.Book1p71
Well, as long as it doesn’t rain. (Book1, p71)
3) as soon as作“一…就…”解, 引导时间状语从句。
I myself am planning to set up a martial arts school in myhome country as soon as I complete my study in China.
我自己就计划在中国学习结束之后回家乡建一所武术学校。 (Book 1, p98)
4) as if/作“好像, 仿佛”解, 常用来引导方式状语从句。如果从句中讲的是非真实情况, 则用虚拟语气。例如:
Being the only non-Asian person on the boat, this drewquite a few curious looks, and finally as small group of peoplegathered around me and watched me write as if I were a sidewalkartist drawing portraits of passersby.
由于船上只有我一个不是亚洲人, 这招来很多好奇的目光, 最后竟有一群人聚集在我的身旁, 他们看着我写东西, 就像看一个给过路行人画画的街头艺人一样。 (Book 1, p44)
His voice had a surprising tone of respect, almost as if hewere addressing the Supreme Court instead of a group of young-sters.

5) so as to作“以便;为的是”解, 后跟动词原形, 表示目的或结果。句中第一个as是介词, 意为“作为”。
So, as a host, whenever there is an activity, you should cometo the place ahead of schedule so as to wait for the guests tocome.
所以说, 主人在搞活动时要提前到场, 等待客人光临。 (Book 1, p59)
6) as far…as意为“远到…;直到…为止”。
south as San Francisco.
预计明天沿西海岸向南直至旧金山有阵雨。 (Book1, p76)
7) as much as意为“多达…”, “达到…之多”。
For example, the opportunities for people to mepend a lot on the weather, so you won’t see people meeting andspending time together outdoors as much as you do in warmercountries.
举个例子来说吧, 人们在外面见面的机会很大程度上取决于天气, 因此你会注意到这里的人们外出见面或在外面共度时光的机会没有你在炎热的国家里见到的那样多。 (Book 1, p80)
8) as good as意为“和…一样好”。
I was almost as good as the top three in swimming and run-ning, but much slower at cycling.
我在游泳和长跑方面与前三名运动员不相上下, 但是骑车速度就相形见绌了。 (Book 1, p94)
9) as well as作“同 (一样也) ”;“和”;“还”解。
Chinese martial arts are a unique culture as well as a goodform of exercise.
中国武术既是一种良好的健身运动, 又是一种独特的文化。
句中as well as意为“不但…而且;既…又…”, 原句可改写为
Chinese martial arts are not only a good form of exercise, but also a unique culture. (Book1, p100)
10) Regard…as意为“把…看作是/当作是”。
Not all people who practice Chinese martial arts have a deepenough understanding of them.Some regard them as physicalmovement.
并非所有练习武术的人都对中国武术有深刻的理解。有人把武术仅仅当作一种健身的手段。 (Book, p97)
11) as to作“至于, 关于”解。例如:
People have different ideas as to who should be responsiblefor the accident.
至于谁应该对这起交通事故负责任, 人们有不同看法。 (Book 1, p114)
12) work as意为“担任”, 句中第二个as引导时间状语从句。
Maria, a Mexican-American student, who worked as a tempo-rary secretary in the department when others left for their holi-days, must have seen me as I left the mailbox with disappoint-ment showing on my face.
由于其他人都离开学校去度假了, 一位名叫玛丽亚的美籍墨西哥裔学生, 在系里担任临时秘书, 她一定是看到了我离开邮箱时流露在脸上的沮丧。

13) act as意为“担任, 担当, 作为”。

14) such as是固定搭配, 意为“像;例如”。
They may get hurt in certain activities such as bungee jump-ing and mountain climbing.
他们可能在蹦极和登山等活动中受伤。 (Book 1, p131)
15) as with意为“as it is the case with…, “和…一样”强调两者相同。
As with Western medicine, some Chinese herbal treatmentscould have a satisfactory result without any danger or side effects.
同西药一样, 一些中草药的疗效很令人满意, 同时又没有任何风险和副作用。 (Book 1, p132)
16) as a result, as a result of表示“由于…的结果”。
As a result, we are able to carry on some of our most impor-tant projects, and thousands of trees were distributed to the cityresidents for planting, thus contributing to the beauty and bril-liance of our city for years to come.
其结果使我们能够继续推行一些重要计划, 将数千棵树分发给市民去种植, 为今后的年月里我市市容的美化和增辉做出贡献。 (Book2, p119)

浅析As与which的用法比较 第7篇
1) This elephant is like a snake, as anybody can see.谁都看得出来, 这头大象就像一条蛇。
2) The stems of bamboo are hollow, which make them very light.竹子的躯干是空心的, 所以很轻。
在上面的两个句子中, as与which的用法极其相似, 它们分别引导一个以整个句子为先行内容的非限制性定语从句。那么as与which在引导这类非限制性定语从句时, 其用法是否完全相同呢?下面从三个方面阐述。
1 as与which词义比较
which引导这类定语从句时, 词义相当明确, 常可译成“这一点、这件事”.as却较特殊, 虽然一些词典也把它解释为and this (这一点, 这件事) , 但我们认为, 仅仅这样解释有可能导致下面句子的转换错误:
3) He saw the girl, and this delighted him.他看到了那姑娘, 这使他很高兴。
He saw the girl, which delighted him.
He saw the girl, as delighted him.
As用作这一特殊关系代词时, 与它在状语从句中所起的作用有着相当密切的关系, 在引导这类非限定性定语从句时, 具有两重性, 即在结构上它象which一样是一个关系代词, 而在语义上它仍然相当于一个表示“如, 正如”含义的一般连词。
2 as与which句法比较
as与which在句法上都有各自的一些习惯用法, 不能混淆, 下面作一简单归纳。
2.1 which常常用作实意动词的主语, 这时它所引导的从句与主句之间常常含有并列因果等关系
4) They moved the fallen tree, which took a long time.
他们把倒下的树搬走了, 这费了不少时间。
5) We took a short cut through the woods, which saved about ten minutes.
我们抄近路穿过树林, 这使我们少花了大约十分钟。以上两句相当于一个由and连接的并列句。
6) The child had fever every night, which worried his parents very much.
这孩子每晚发烧, 这使他父母非常焦急。
7) She mimicked everything he said, which made him furious.
她模仿他说话, 这使他勃然大怒。
以上两句多少含有某种逻辑上的因果关系, 从句中的谓语动词常用make, worry, delay, upset, enrage, annoy.等“使役动词”。
在以上四个句子中, as是绝对不能用的。
2.2 as常作一些实义动词的宾语, 这类动词与as几乎成了一种固定搭配
8) He is tired, as anybody can see.
他累了, 这一点大家都能看得出来。
9) As we know now, heavy objects and light objects fall at the same speed unless air holds them back..
我们现在都知道, 如果没有空气的阻力, 重的物体和轻的物体下落的速度是一样的。
10) There was, as I remember, a bar around here.我记得这儿附近有一家酒吧。
这时一般用as, 偶尔也有用which的, 例如:
11) Moreover, which you may hardly believe, the examiners had decided in advance to fail half the candidates!
此外, 你可能很难相信, 主考人员事先已经决定要淘汰一半应考人!
这里的which用的比较别扭, 但是当从句的谓语动词是否定形式或从句谓语带的是一个复合宾语结构时, 一般只能用which, 例如:
12) One has to eat standing up in that bar, which I don‘like.在那家酒吧得站着吃东西, 这我可不喜欢。
13) You pretended not to know me, which I didn‘t understand.你假装不认识我, 这我可弄不明白为什么。
14) He admires Mrs.Brown, which I find strange.他很爱慕布朗夫人, 这使我觉得很奇怪。
2.3 当从句谓语是由系动词+形容词构成时, 常用which作主语
15) He married her, which was disgraceful.他同她结了婚, 这很不光彩。
16) She cycled from London to Glasgow, which is pretty good for a woman of 75.她骑自行车从伦敦到格拉斯哥, 这对一位七十五岁的妇女来说真是不简单。
17) They have invited me to dinner, which is very kind of them.他们请我去吃饭, 这真是太客气了。
As只能与少数几个形容词连用, 如clear, evident等, 例如:
18) He is a foreigner, as is clear from his appearance.他是个外国人, 这一点可以从他的外表清楚地看出来。
19) The caller was an old lady, as was evident from the voice on the phone.打电话的是一位老妇人, 这从电话的声音可以明显地听出来。
不难发现, as与which这时有明显不同。用which时, 主句先是陈述一桩事情, 然后从句补充说话人对主句所表示内容的看法。用as时, 主句是说话人作出的判断, 从句则提供一种理由或依据。在结构上, which引导的这类定语从句中的形容词有不少具有这类性质, 即都可以带一个不定式的复合结构。比如下面三个句子在语法上同样是成立的:
20) It was disgraceful of him to have married her.
21) It is pretty good for a woman of 75 to cycle from London to Glasgow.
22) It is very kind of them to have invited me to dinner.
而as引导的从句中的形容词却不具有这种特性, 不能带不定式复合结构, 但可以带that从句, 比如句18、19可以说成:
23) It is clear from his appearance that he is a foreigner.
24) It was evident from the voice on the phone that the caller was an old lady.
注意:有些形容词几乎与as组成了固定搭配, 如as is most likely, as is well known, as is natural.等等。
2.4 用简洁表达法, 而且两种句子意思不尽相同, as引导的这类定语从句意义上更像一个状语从句。
试比较:
25) He died of cancer, which is what I predicted.他死于癌症, 这正是我所预料的。
26) He died of cancer, as I predicted.正如我所预料的那样, 他死于癌症。
27) The activity was postponed, which was exactly what we wanted.这项活动延期了, 这正是我们所希望的。
28) The activity was postponed, as we exactly wanted.正如我们所希望的那样, 这项活动延期了。
29) Caroline was elected by a large majority, which was what most people had expected.卡罗琳以多数票当选, 这正是大多数人所期望的。
30) Caroline was elected by a large majority, as most people had expected.正如大多数人所期望的那样, 卡罗琳以多数票当选了。
用which结构时, 句子意思侧重表示主句所陈述的事实同猜想、预期的情况相符;用as结构时, 句子意思侧重表示猜想预料的情况已经变成或将变成事实。这时, 虽说as引导的从句在意义上更像状语从句, 但在句法结构上仍不失为一个非限制性定语从句, 因为, 这时的as从句与as引导的一般状语从句还是有着明显区别的。试比较下面两个句子:
31) He died of cancer, as his father had done.
在前一个句子里, as用作特殊关系代词, 代替主句所表示的内容, 在它所引导的非限定性定语从句中作predict的定语。在后一个句子里, as是一般连词, 意思是in the same way that, 它引导的是一个方式状语从句, 全句的意思是:他像父亲一样死于癌症。
2.5 as常接report, announce, say, expect等动词的被动语态
例如:
32) He opposed the idea, as could be expected.正如可以预料的那样, 他反对这个意见。
33) As has been said above, grammar is not a set of dead rules.正如前面所述, 语法并不是一套死规则。
34) A new hotel will be built, as is announced in today‘s papers.据今天报载, 将建造一家新旅馆。
2.6 which本身在从句中还可用作定语、介词宾语, 而as却不能
35) He is very old, which fact is important.他年纪很大了, 这个事实相当重要。
36) He may come, in which case I‘ll ask him.他可能会来的, 要是那样的话我就去问他。
37) He changed his mind for the second time, after which I refused ever to go out with him again.他再一次改变了主意, 之后, 我拒绝再和他一块出去了。
3 as从句与which从句在句子中的位置
as从句与which从句在句子中的位置问题一般并无争议。Which从句一般位于主句之后, 不能放在主句前面, 不能说:
38) Which was reckless, Jack drove too fast.
而只能说:
38) Jack drove too fast, which was reckless.
杰克开车太快了, 这简直有点胡来。
As从句的位置则比较灵活, 一般可以放在句首、句中、或句末, 例如:
39) As was expected, he performed the task with success.正如预料的那样, 他成功地完成了那项任务。
40) The Smiths, as you probably know, are going to America.你们可能知道, 史密斯全家打算去美国。
综上所述, which引导的这类非限定性定语从句无论是在结构上还是在意义上都是无容置疑的。而as引导的这类非限定性定语从句往往只是在结构上较为明显, 在意义上多少有点像状语从句, 有的语法学家把它称之为“状语化的定语从句”。as从句在句子中的位置的灵活性正好证明了这一观点。当然, as与某些单词、结构的搭配能力相当强, 而且比较固定, 也就是说具有某种习语特性。正是由于这些原因, 我们认为as与which在使用时应当特别慎重, 一般不宜随便替换。以上笔者只是简单作了些归纳、比较, 谈了一些粗浅的看法, 不当之处还望同行加以批评指正。
