科学论文摘要的作用是用简洁的语言概括总结文章的主要内容, 帮助读者快速了解作者的研究目的、实验方法、结果与结论, 使读者可以根据自己的需求和兴趣决定是否阅读整篇文章。医学研究人员能否写出符合国际标准的英语摘要在很大程度上决定了其论文能否被国外读者认可, 甚至影响着其研究成果在国际医学界的传播以及同国外相关研究的交流。然而, 目前中国学生在英语摘要的写作方面仍存在着相当多的困难和问题, 医学博士生也不例外。本次研究以西安交通大学医学院100篇博士学位论文的英文摘要为研究对象, 找出其中的错误, 分析并讨论如何避免这些错误。提出了提高摘要写作水平的几点建议, 希望能对医学论文英语摘要写作有所帮助。
1 研究方法
研究了2006-2009年西安交通大学医学院100篇医学博士学位论文的英文摘要, 从中发现了许多问题和错误, 主要涉及语法、句法和词汇等。分析归纳这些问题时, 本文沿用了先前研究中一些合理的分类方式。对于一些未能归入已有分类中的问题, 本文提出了新的分类, 并讨论这些问题的解决方法。最后, 为了准确了解医学生在英语摘要写作中经常遇到的问题并给出恰当的建议, 对40位西安交通大学医学研究生进行了问卷调查。分析调查结果后, 提出了关于医学英语摘要写作的若干建议。
2 研究结果及讨论
医学论文英语摘要中的问题主要分为两类:一是摘要写作方法问题, 可细分为摘要篇幅不当、时态误用、语态错误与文体修辞四类, 二是语言应用问题, 可细分为用词不当、拼写错误、冠词错误与句法错误四类。
2.1 摘要写作方法问题
篇幅不当。摘要的篇幅主要取决于论文的长度和摘要类型, 通常情况下摘要为100-500字。西安交通大学博士学位论文要求摘要为1, 000字左右。本次研究发现有些摘要篇幅较短, 未能准确表达论文的主要内容。这一问题与两个因素有关:一是摘要中应有的组成部分残缺, 二是与对应的中文摘要相比, 英文摘要过于简化[1]。而有些摘要则篇幅过长, 叙述累赘, 多达近2, 000字。如在一篇有关肝外胆管癌术前诊断和预后因素研究的学位论文英语摘要中, Background约200字, Objective约150字, Methods约350字, Results和 Conclusion约1, 200字。如此长的篇幅违背了摘要的目的, 即简明扼要地概述整篇论文以便于读者快速把握论文主要内容。因此, 在摘要写作时, 作者应注意控制篇幅, 既不能追求简练而遗漏主要研究内容和结果, 又不能过分赘述本应放在正文中的研究细节, 如具体实验数据等。
时态误用。英语中共有12种时态, 在多数医学论文中常用的只是其中的3-4种, 一般现在时和一般过去式最常见, 现在完成时和一般将来时偶尔出现, 其他时态 (如进行时) 则很少见到[2]。笔者在100篇摘要中发现了很多时态误用现象, 这些误用会在一定程度上影响读者的理解。例 1 This study is to investigate the clinical value of Heimlich valve drainage for interventional procedure-induced pneumothorax in cancer patients.
论文摘要的Objective/purpose/aim (研究目的) 介绍了研究的目的和方向。在完成论文时, 整个研究活动已成为过去, 应用一般过去时叙述研究目的。故例1中的is 应改为was.
语态不当。科技论文重在对客观事物和研究过程的叙述, 至于谁做的研究并不重要, 因此学者们曾主张在英语摘要中使用被动语态来强调事实本身。在中国科研工作者写的英语摘要中不难发现作者对被动语态的偏爱。然而近年来, 国外摘要已开始越来越多的使用主动语态, 因为主动语态能更加准确有力地表达作者的思想[3]。在笔者看来, 主动和被动时态很难断定孰优孰劣, 英语摘要中时态的选用应该视具体情况和个人写作习惯而定, 但不论选择何种, 作者都应正确应用, 避免错误。例2 This article has been studied how nonspecific lgG in human serum interfered with the detection of Anti HCV antibody by EIA.用在摘要开头的一些固定句式必须使用主动语态, 如“This article/paper/report deals with/discusses/describes…”, 因为主语article/paper/report并非动作的承受者, 而是执行者。故例4中的has been studied应改为studies。
文体修辞不当。一篇摘要应客观叙述研究方法和结果, 措辞应简练朴素, 不掺杂主观感受和宣传语调。然而在对于医学英语摘要的研究中, 发现了这样的句子“A very interesting example is found that…”, “The method is very useful for…” 等。在写作中作者应避免这类句子, 以显示摘要的客观性。摘要要用正式语言书写, 不能出现口语词汇或者不标准的缩略语, 如“isn’t”、“haven’t”、“a bit”和“lab”等[4]。此外, 书写句子时, 应尽可能使句子主语靠近其动词, 方便读者理解句子意思。
2.2 摘要中英语语言应用问题
尽管选取的100篇英语摘要来自医学博士学位论文, 但是有关英语应用方面的问题仍层出不穷。这些问题可以分为以下四类:用词不当、拼写错误、冠词错误与句法错误。
用词不当。英语摘要中的用词不当常见的有名词、形容词、介词和动词使用不当, 下面只举几例加以说明。
例3 Because the existing treatment of insulin injection could not model insulin physiological behavior, the complication of diabetes mellitus was failed to be prevented. 英语中, “model”有模型、模特、模范之意, 也可用作动词, 表示“做模型, 塑造”。上例中, “模拟”一词应用“simulate”。“behavior”一词表示行为举止, 这里“生理状态”应用“physiological conditions”。“糖尿病并发症”有专业词汇“diabetic complications”。另外, “fail”是不及物动词, 不能用于被动语态, “无法避免”可写作“difficult to avoid”。因此, 上句可改为“Because the existing treatment of insulin injection could not simulate physiological conditions to maintain blood glucose, diabetic complications were difficult to avoid.”
拼写错误。一些人认为写作中单词拼写错误似乎微不足道, 但一篇充斥着拼写错误的论文摘要会令读者质疑它的学术严谨性和科学性。拼写错误的原因有两点, 一是作者的英语基本功不扎实, 而且写作时粗心大意;二是写完摘要后, 作者没有仔细检查校对。
例4 The precursor of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a single chain without activity, which is activiated by HGF activator。本例中出现了拼写错误“activiated”, 应改为“activated”。
冠词错误。英语中只有三个冠词:a、an 和 the。其中, a 和 an是不定冠词, the是定冠词。冠词不能单独使用, 只能在名词前面帮助解释名词的意思。在对100篇医学摘要的研究中, 发现了大量冠词不合规范的用法, 这不仅妨碍了作者准确地阐述自己的研究, 也影响了读者对原文意思的准确理解。
例5 Ventricular hypertrophy, as a adaptive change in response to volume and/or pressure overload, is the common pathophysiological course to many cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and acute myocardial infarction。
这里“adaptive”一词以元音音节开头, 其前要用冠词an, 而非a。
句法错误。医学英语有不同于普通英语的句法特点, 如名词化、缩略语、后置定语、被动语态和复合句的大量应用。这些特点一方面反映了医学英语的准确性和客观性, 另一方面也使初学者难以驾驭医学英语。在医学博士生所写的英语摘要中, 句子成分错误、不同类事物比较、悬垂修饰语、名词化滥用、数字和缩略语使用不当、中式英语、标点符号使用不当等句法错误时常出现。例 6 It was reported that over-apoptosis and enhanced expression of Bcl-2 in the articular cartilage from KBD children, but the relationship between the chondrocyte apoptosis and chondronecosis is unknown. 本例中, “It was reported that”后的从句缺少谓语, 属于句子成分残缺。可改为“It was reported that chondrocyte over-apoptosis and enhanced expression of Bcl-2 occured in the articular cartilage from KBD children, but the relationship between the chondrocyte apoptosis and chondronecosis is unknown”.
2.3 统计结果
对100篇医学英语摘要中的各类错误进行了统计, 表1显示了各类错误的出现次数和所占比例。
从100篇摘要中共摘出了199例错误, 其中英语语言应用问题占大多数 (71%) 。不难看出, 医学研究人员能否正确应用英语, 在很大程度上决定了英语摘要的写作水准。在英语语言应用问题中, 句法错误的出现频率最高 (22.5%) , 用词不当排在第二位 (20.0%) , 拼写错误也值得注意, 占到了所有错误的17.5%。相比语言应用问题, 摘要写作方法问题所占比例较小, 为29%, 其中时态错误最常见, 占到所有错误的11.5%。
2.4 摘要写作建议
为准确把握医学生在英语摘要写作中经常遇到的问题并给出恰当的建议, 对40位西安交通大学医学研究生进行了问卷调查。问卷包括16道问题。40位学生中有38位认为自己的专业英语水平“一般”或“相对较差”, 占到了总人数的95%, 这表明了医学生的专业英语水平亟待提高。关于英文摘要写作中遇到的最大困难, 21位学生选择了“词语选择”, 12位选择了“摘要内容”, 这一调查结果也与100篇摘要中“用词不当”占较大比例的统计结果一致。当问及是否读过有关英语摘要写作的书籍来提高写作水平时, 有28位学生选择了“是”, 这一结果令人欣慰, 说明很大一部分学生采取了措施积极提高自己的英语摘要写作水平。
鉴于100篇摘要的研究结论和40份问卷的调查结果, 笔者提出了以下几点建议, 希望能对广大医学工作者及医学生的英语摘要写作有所帮助。首先, 医学研究者应该以正确的态度对待英语摘要写作。一些人不重视摘要写作, 认为摘要仅仅是从论文正文各部分挑出的若干主题句的组合, 有些人还认为科研论文中真正重要的是正文部分, 摘要仅仅是一种形式或者修饰。诸如此类的错误观点都应该纠正, 因为大多数人拿到一篇论文后首先看到的是摘要部分, 而非论文正文, 摘要的水准决定了读者对整篇论文的第一印象。所以, 应该认真对待摘要写作。其次, 医学研究者应该加强英语基本技能的训练, 提高英语水平, 平时可以多读一些原汁原味的英语文章, 多学习英语中的标准表达, 增强自己的语感。医学研究者尤其要多读国外权威医学杂志中的英语摘要和这些杂志对于摘要写作的要求, 这样才能准确地把握当前英语摘要写作的趋势, 逐渐写出能被国际医学界和国外读者所认可的摘要。

这个方法的好处是可以让求职者清楚了解该职位是否适合自己，而本身资料又是否切合要求，而且，明白了各项要求后，就可依据每一点在履历表上重点提出自己在该方面的强项。突出卖点(selling point)，将之放在最吸引人的地方，使招聘者一眼可见，有利于present自己。

工作经验是resume中令招聘者相当感兴趣的一项内容，措词得当是不可忽视的要务。
刚毕业，何来工作经验？其实，读书时的兼职、实习、实践，以至所曾参加的一些课外活动，如：协助出版校刊、举办活动、展览、宣传……都可算是工作经验。不过，表达起来要有针对性地展开，列出那些与所找工作有关的项目重点介绍，必要时更可使用summary的方式，以让招聘者深入地了解。

I have been awarded the degree of Master of Arts from XXXX so I understand the need for academic advisement and program planning in a nontraditional higher education environment.I have also experienced, first-hand, the comforting effect of being able to contact an adviser who genuinely cares for the success of students.
During my career as an electrician I was elected Chairman of the Executive Board which sat as the union’s representatives to the apprenticeship advisory board.In this capacity I was able to be an effective advisor to apprentices who were experiencing scholastic problems which threatened their future in the industry;especially to older apprentices who were seeking a career change and had problems adjusting to the obligations of work, school and family life.
I believe my educational background in nontraditional postgraduate education and my work related duties of counseling and advising students enrolled in learning programs qualifies me for consideration for the position of Graduate Student Advisor.I look forward to discussing how my skills can be of value to XXX as it prepares to move into the new millennium.

译为:I feel confident of the skill I can bring to your opening.

3.2 借鉴平行文本, 调适诉求手段
合理借鉴平行文本, 采用译语受众熟悉的表达方式, 以保证译文表达地道规范, 从而达到目标文本的诉求功能。汉语喜用“在XX方面”结构来分清层次, 如本文“在学习方面”“在课余方面”等。汉语还喜用排比和五字结构, 如“专业功底扎实、知识结构完善”, 但译成英语, 若不摆脱原文结构, 逐字逐句翻译, 译文会有翻译腔, 且表达生硬毫无感染力。例如:
在学习方面, 我努力认真地学好每一门课程, 基本掌握了从事财务会计以及相关工作的能力;在在课余方面, 我更注重自己能力的培养和完善自己的知识结构, 积极参加了多次社团活动和社会实践并获得奖励。

3.3 有效传达原文实质性信息
由于我国社会特有的国情, 中文语篇中常提及入党、党校学习经历, 以表明思想上要求进步, 在校期间个人表现积极向上。但在西方受众眼里, 加入党派是个人行为, 且政治活动与求职无关。若按照原句原原本本翻译出来, 译文不仅是对读者 (也就是招聘方) 无用的信息项, 不符合读者的阅读期待, 而且还与读者价值观不符, 容易引起文化误读。因此, 这类带有意识形态色彩的话语不宜译出。在篇幅有限的情况下, 应尽可能多的展示求职者的实质性信息, 采用符合译语读者阅读预期的话语方式, 译文才更具说服性。例如:

4 结束语
本文结合简历自荐信的文本特点及其预期功能, 从话语内容和诉求手段上对中英文自荐信进行对比分析, 总结这类文本的翻译策略。作为一种实用文体, 简历自荐信在翻译过程中, 不仅要有效传达与应聘求职的实质性信息, 还要有受众意识, 对不符合受众阅读期待的非实质性内容进行适当删改。借鉴平行文本的表达方法, 用译语读者熟悉惯用的方式进行组句谋篇, 以更好地达到自荐信的预期效果。
摘要：该文选取实用范文网和jobsearch网站自荐信范文为案例, 从话语内容和诉求手段上对中英文自荐信进行对比分析, 在此基础上探讨自荐信翻译策略调适。译文应充分考虑到自荐信文本的文体特点及预期功能, 有效传达自荐信中与应聘求职有关的实质性信息, 真实有效的向受众推介求职者的能力和形象, 以切合目的语读者的阅读期待, 从而提高这类文本的翻译效果。
