The ICD had its origin in the World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children in Geneva, Switzerland in 1925. It is not clear as to why June 1 was chosen as the ICD: one theory has it that the Chinese consul-general in San Francisco (USA) gathered a number of Chinese orphans to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in 1925, which happened to be on June 1 that year, and also coincided with the conference in Geneva.

June 1 has since been observed as the ICD by numerous countries, especially by Communist countries; in the Western world the ICD is usually celebrated on other days of the year (if at all), and there is often little public awareness about these celebrations. (See the section on Germany below for further discussions.) Consequently there is sometimes a misperception that June 1 as the ICD was a Communist invention. Nonetheless, in recent years even some groups within the United States started observing the ICD on June 1.

【摘要】英语国家绘本随着改革开放的深入,大量涌入国内,帮助儿童通过阅读,提高英语阅读素养。然而,英文绘本无论从受众范围到阅读引导都有待研究发展。本文从学校教育、家庭使用、图书馆推广和新媒体等角度对英文绘本的推广策略进行研究,以期对用好英语绘本、让孩子爱上英语绘本阅读提出有效的措施和建议。

【关键词】英文绘本 绘本的地位 绘本的推广

一、英文绘本概述

英文绘本对培养早期阅读习惯和提高认知能力方面的作用得到越来越广泛的认知和肯定。根据2011年国务院颁布的《中国儿童发展纲要2011-2020》明确提出培养儿童阅读习惯,增加阅读时间和阅读量。绘本是图文并茂,以儿童作为主要阅读对象的故事情节类的读物,绘本的语言简洁生动,图片色彩丰富多样,内容贴近儿童,能够引起他们的共鸣。英语绘本作为西方儿童的早期阅读读物,对于我国的英语学习者特别是初学英语的学生而言是不可多得的阅读材料。英语绘本在阅读教学领域的价值日益受到研究者和教育者的认知和重视。

儿童英语学习一直是国人关注的是热点话题。在很多家长眼里,孩子不能“输在起跑线上”。尽早接触英语,学好英语已经成为很多家长的共识。随着英文绘本大量涌入国内,阅读英文绘本从众多的英语学习方法与途径中脱颖而出,受到了越来越多家长和英语教师的青睐。

英文绘本,其作用不仅仅在于讲故事,传知识,它能够在儿童阅读的同时,培养孩子的审美和思考能力,逐渐锻炼其语言语感与思维方式。培养良好的英语阅读素养,养成终生阅读的良好习惯,是一个长期的过程。在儿童初期阅读开始,就应该让他们接触到绘本,并持之以恒地阅读适宜其能力发展的绘本读物,逐步提高其阅读素养。

二、英文绘本推广存在的困难和原因分析

在英语绘本受到追捧的现状下,我们需要比较清醒地认识到,由于英语在我国仍然是一门外语,其应用和推广面临一定的困难和问题,英语绘本需要真正走入千家万户,让儿童通过这扇窗爱上阅读仍需要有效的引导。主要困难如下:

1.缺少语言环境,儿童缺乏阅读主动性。不少家庭里,父母并没有英文知识的储备,因此,亲子阅读受到了阻碍。对于孩童来讲,阅读本身就具有极大的挑战性,阅读中文绘本对于儿童来讲也颇有难度,需要一定的耐心和毅力,阅读英文绘本更需要帮助、指导和鼓励。在很多孩子看来,英文绘本仍然是充满陌生文字的图画书,需要成人帮助他们解读。缺少语言环境和家长、老师的帮助,儿童阅读会遇到各种各样的问题,造成阅读中半途而废。营造一个比较良好的英语语言环境需要家庭和学校(幼儿园)具备有较高英语水平的成员,才能提高儿童阅读英文绘本的主动性。

2.英语教学“听说为先”的教学理念下,阅读指导滞后,学生独立阅读英语的能力没能得到及时发展。绘本是适应儿童语言和认知能力发展的阅读资源,其题材内容多为拟人化的动物、小孩子、大自然,是儿童眼中的世界,充满奇趣的想象。而随着年龄的增长,适宜的绘本应该在语言上更加丰富、情节更加曲折复杂、画面更为细腻。如果英语阅读开始较晚,学生在认知能力逐步提高,母语水平接近或达到成人水平,对阅读的需求更加多元化,更需要从阅读中汲取新信息,此时大部分绘本对他们而言就不再适宜,学生就会感到在看“小人书”,错过了运用绘本的最佳时期。

3.英语绘本课堂教学得不到保证,绘本阅读缺乏科学的引导与使用。学校教育学业任务繁重,老师需要完成规定的教学内容,只有少数以外语为特色的学校可以抽出专门的时间进行绘本教学,多数绘本教学穿插于课本教学中,无法保证绘本阅读的数量。绘本作为英语学习平台的角色还未得到充分开发,导致国内这些绘本教学资源的稀少,以课程形式呈现出来的绘本就更有限了。而在教学方法上,很多老师教绘本等同于教阅读,一定程度上剥夺了学生阅读的乐趣,成为新的学习负担。在选择范围上,绘本本身具有趣味性和丰富的想象力,而部分教师会更注重其教育性,老师的选择与学生的需求差异较大。在语言呈现上,如何让学生感受到绘本的音韵之美,保持英文材料的“原汁原味”也是值得思考的问题。

4. 绘本引进缺乏合理分级制度与科学指导。分级阅读就是要按照读者不同的智力和心理发育阶段,为不同阅读者提供不同的读物,提供科学性和有针对性的阅读图书。我国的英文绘本引进和推广中缺乏权威、科学、本土的分级标准,教师、家长主要凭经验来选择,盲目性较大。分级阅读要求按照儿童心智发展规律,对教育学、儿童文学、语言学等学科进行广泛深入研究,遵循群体性差异原则和儿童本位原则,为不同年龄儿童量身定做适合的读物。

5.此外,英文绘本的购买渠道有限,价格昂贵很大程度上限制了阅读的广泛开展。国内购买英文绘本的主要渠道为亚马逊和当当网等专业图书网站,可喜的是目前国内已出现专门的英文原版绘本团购网站,此外还有专业的绘本出版社在绘本引进和推广中也起着积极的推动作用。

三、英文绘本推广简述

1.主要绘本推广人。英文绘本的推广儿童文学作家、学者、民间绘本推广人、译者功不可没。目前,在大陆、香港、台湾等地有许多优秀的绘本专家,为绘本的推广做出贡献,绘本专家方素珍,儿童文学作家余治莹,儿童阅读推广人阿甲先生,儿童文学作家梅子涵、王一梅,绘本译者更是不胜枚举。绘本推广人有的致力于为儿童写绘本、有的将优秀绘本译成中文、有的著书推荐国内外优秀绘本,正是有了这些人的努力,儿童绘本才出现如此繁荣的景象。

2.英语绘本推广的主要途径。

(1)亲子阅读和学校绘本课教学。指导和推进亲子阅读是英语绘本推广最根本的途径之一,只有家长们意识到了绘本阅读的重要作用,从小为孩子提供阅读机会,帮助孩子爱上阅读,绘本推广也就达到了预期的目标。而学校是儿童学习的主要场所,在课堂上,老师采用绘本开展语言或学科教学,丰富课堂内容,拓展课外知识,课堂外,学校可以列出推荐书目,建议学生利用双休日、寒暑假时间进行阅读。

(2)出版社和图书馆推介及英文绘本馆的兴起。书店、图书馆、书展都是儿童接触绘本的良好平台,设立英文绘本专柜,将优秀的引进绘本放在醒目位置,开展公益读书会,亲子阅读活动,制作绘本活动,都是有效的推广方式。民间绘本馆的兴起反映了大众对优秀绘本的需求,一定程度上减轻了家庭购置绘本的经济压力,特别是英文绘本馆对英文绘本的阅读推广更是有积极作用。

(3)新媒体的关注。网络媒体信息传播快、地域跨度广。微博、微信公众号、教育类APP都可以将绘本介绍、购买途径推送到家长和老师的移动通讯设备上,加快了绘本的普及和推广。绘本的衍生音视频资源也可以通过新媒体的传播弥补英语语言环境的不足,帮助儿童接触到更加地道的语言、更好地理解书籍内容,感受新的阅读体验,增强个体的学习性。

四、绘本推广策略

1.建立分级制度,推荐阅读书目。在英语国家,英语阅读材料的分级体系比较健全,分级阅读成为选择老师家长选择绘本的重要依据,一套完整、详细、科学的分级系统有利于明晰绘本难度和适宜的阅读对象,大大方便各个年龄阶段的儿童挑选合适自己的英文绘本。

2.在学校、图书馆、社区开展英语绘本朗读交流。阅读只有在交流中才能实现它最大的意义,即,阅读一本书之后,经过自己的一番理解,再将这些想法与别人交流,不断内化,自己才有所得。对于儿童来说,交流尤其重要。学校可以设立阅读角,欢迎英文绘本爱好者加入、讨论;图书馆可以开展绘本朗读或表演大赛,将阅读过程动态化、生动化;社区也可以成立儿童绘本阅读小屋。上述活动都有利于鼓励孩子开口、自我表现,这都将是孩子们继续阅读的动力。

3.课堂教学中运用英语绘本。有条件的学校可以开一门英文绘本阅读课,挑选经典绘本,让绘本在校园里得到应有的重视。老师们也可以在课堂之余将绘本作为补充材料介绍给学生,或者选取一段小故事,活跃课堂氛围。

4.深入绘本的介绍、推广和研究,促进家、校、社会多方合作。绘本的介绍、推广和研究任重而道远,需要专家、学者的不懈努力,也需要机构、学校、家长的支持。只有在家、校、社会的多方合作下,才能让英文绘本阅读蔚然成风,让儿童在浓厚的氛围下,将阅读作为一件愉快的事情进行。

No matter the parents or teachers, they all encourage children's creativity.In class, the teacher will praise the students for their imagination even it has no relation with the class.In a test, the teacher will be pleased if he sees something new in a pupil's answer.There is an example:A Chinese boy who immigrated to the United States drew a crocodile playing with a log on his test paper about log.The teacher gave him an extra 0.5 score for this creativity.This will seldom happen in a Chinese classroom.The Chinese students are asked to give the memorized right answers on their papers, and high marks will be given.If a pupil also drew a picture on his paper, much more probably, he will be blamed for doing things that are out of regular rule.

In American class, democracy is also an important phenomenon.Every pupil is treated equally.This democracy can be traced back to colonial times.The nation's founding fathers started this great experiment to elect representatives, to establish the nation's laws and to determine its foreign policy.Those who disapprove of the laws and policies established by their representatives may openly express their disapproval and try to elect new representatives to carry out their wishes.This experiment is still in a dominant position in the government, and even in every family.Many families hold weekly meetings to determine household rules and activities.American children are introduced to the democratic concepts of majority rule and representative government at a very early age.

Democracy is not only a way of governing, it is also a way of life and a way of education.Most schools have student council with elected representatives so that students can voice their opinions about school regulations and activities.In class, students also can express their views about teachers'teachings.Teachers also encourage pupils to express their opinions and take careful cares to their notions.In American class, there is no strict discipline to force the students to sit up straight and not to move or talk.The atmosphere of an American class is easy and happy.Children can sit forward or backward;they can even sit on their legs or the desks.Children can move their desks for convenience.The teacher's job is not to tell them the right-there answers but to show them the way of thinking and finding out the answers by themselves.Children are encouraged to have positive mental attitude:to believe in themselves, to believe in their own abilities With this attitude, the students are introduced to respect eyes and ears:that is to look at and listen to others carefully and find out their own ways of doing things.Besides these, Integrity Compassion, Cooperation, Perseverance and Initiative are also thought highly in educating children.During class times, they are not always just within the classrooms.They also have a lot of ou door classes.Many elementary schools in America have out-doo playgrounds.

Children's education is put into a high position in America Every family tries to give their children as many opportunities to develop skills and worthwhile interests as possible.The government also spends a large amount of money on children's education.This custom of valuing education dates from the Puritans time.One of the things that the Puritans believed was that every person should be able to read the Bible.One hundred percen literacy seemed like a dream in the 17th century.Within just a few years after their arrival, they took steps to set up a system o education in their colony, which eventually, in less than 20 years the Puritans introduced two practices that still influence American youth:compulsory education for all children and public taxation for schools.The Americans make great efforts to educate the entire nation.The children are part of the most ambitious undertakings in history of education.Their goal is to achieve universal literacy and to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote both their own individual welfare as well as that of the general public.Though this goal has not been fully achieved, it remains an ideal toward which the American education system is directed.The progress that has been made is notable both for its scope and for the educational methods tha have been developed in the process of achieving it.The American government spends much money every year on children's education.Most of the money came from the Americans taxation.

In America, the percentage of students who can receive higher education is 85%while in China it is just 10%.The cause of the difference is the different high-education system.In America, the purpose of cultivating college students is to promote the whole nation's quality.But in China, we produce a college student because there is a position needing a person with certain knowledge to be fixed in.In our country we need limited college students;however, we have much more elementary and middle school students who want to be college students, so the competition is fierce.Also because of the cruel competition, many schools just pay attention to the students'marks, not their abilities.This is called exam-oriented education.Now we call for education reform, for quality-oriented education.But, if the high-education system isn't changed, the quality-oriented education wil just be a slogan.In America, students have no pressure of competition, so they can spend more time on developing their al kinds of abilities.Teachers also direct them to develop their interests or hobbies.Because of these, the American classes are permeated with easy and happy atmosphere.

3 Some Negative Points

As everything has its two sides, the American education on children also has its negative sides.Americans pursue individualism, freedom, democracy, happiness and new life.They introduce these to their children at their early ages.Sometimes, this brings negative effects.

1) he Americans request freedom and security, then the government permits them to hold private guns.Now gun-problem has become a tuff task in America.Gun violence is frequent in rea life and in TV or video programs.Children grow up in this environment and they might imitate what they have seen or heard Several child-violence have attracted the society's attention these years.We have known, through press or media, that in America, just during the recent years, several tragedies have happened:children killed their classmates or teachers even their parents with guns.Gun Control Legislation has been adopted in America.But the problem is still serious:Many people believe that holding guns is their rights.

2) Many American families move from one place to another frequently.In the United States, one cannot go home to find one's past.The old neighborhood revisited usually looks completely different.Even those who stay put have a steady supply of new neighbors.Children get used to this mobile life and the result is:"the highly mobile American society leaves individuals with feelings of footlessness, isolation, indifference to community welfare, and shallow personal relationships".Vance Packard, one of the nation's well-known nonfiction writers, urged that efforts be made to stabilize the shifting population so that Americans can"rediscover the natural human community".

3) "All men are created equal", says the Declaration of Independence.This statement does not mean all human beings are equal in ability or ambition but means that all people should be treated equally before the law and given equal privileges and opportunities.In practice, this ideal does not work perfectly.There have always been those who would deny the rights of others for their own interests.In some American families, children's rights are put too high.The children seem to be in charge.Some parents are even reluctant and perhaps afraid to say"no"to their children for fear of stifling their personalities or losing their love.As a result, the children and their possessions take charge of the house, and the youngsters make excessive demands upon their parents'time and money.In those families, the adults often suffer in silence, believing that they are doing the right thing for their children.At the same time, the children suffer, too, lacking the security of strong, decisive parents who set appropriate limits and provide intelligent guidance.This phenomenon also becomes a problem of nowadays America.This is an unexpected effect of educating children too much democracy.Though in many families, children are in dominant positions, there are also parents and children who often disagree with each other in a society of rapidly changing social and moral values.They may argue about unimportant matters as styles of dress or hairdos.But quarrels may also concern about how the children spend their money, career decisions, use of family cars, etc.Some children may drop out of school, run away from home or even use illegal drugs.Children do this, because they think they are individuals, they are equal to adults and they have their rights to pursue freedom and happiness, too.

4 Conclusion

Culture can influence and reflect education.A nation's future lies mainly on the quality of its citizens.And children's education is an important part of the country's future.Culture may form children's characteristics or opinions about the society, but it also has negative influence, too.Every nation should develop the positive influences of culture on education and try to avoid the negative sides.
